Twelve and Twenty-Four

Side Note: 12 and 24.

The numbers 12 and 24 lead off with the predominant number 12 which represents the nation of Israel and the Church. We have 12 sons of Jacob, and 12 apostles. This flows through to Revelation 7 verses 4 and 5. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. (Revelation 7:4) Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. (Revelation 7:5) Here we see the number twelve (12) times one thousand (1000) giving each tribe twelve thousand, (12,000) and totaling one hundred and forty-four thousand (144,000). Giving us 12000 from every tribe listed. In Revelation Chapter 7 we also see the absence of one tribe: Dan, this of course takes us back to Jeroboam because he is denounced many times as the man who caused Israel to sin. However, even the division of Jeroboam goes back to Solomon and his idolatry with the temples that he built for his wives on the mount of corruption where he also worshiped those heathen gods, here was the wisest man and yet the sin of Adam, the battle of the corrupt flesh overtook Solomon and cost his descendants the fullness of the kingdom.

Although Jeroboam was God’s tool he rebelled, and as Aaron built a golden calf, and said to Israel, These are thy gods, O Israel, so also in like manner Jeroboam built an idol; however, he built not one but two golden calves. One  calf was placed in Dan, in the northern most part of his kingdom, and one golden calf in Bethel (the house of God), in the southern part of his kingdom. The purpose of the two calves was to keep the children of Israel from going to Jerusalem and worshiping Jehovah. Thus, in the same manner that Aaron had presented other gods to the children of Israel at the base of mount Sinai, so also Jeroboam said, These are thy gods, O Israel. This was a false system that Jeroboam set up with men who were the lowest of the low to be the priests of his ungodly religion. In Revelation 7 God substitutes Dan with the tribe of Manasses (a son of Joseph), thus completing the twelve tribes and then multiplying each tribe by 12000. (The other son of Joseph, Ephraim, was not included in this list of tribes in Revelation 7 because of idolatry. In the book of Hosea 11:8, we read that God’s heart turned within Him because of Ephraim, How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? [how] shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? [how] shall I set thee as Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.) So, we see that number twelve is very important in the relationship of Israel. In Revelation 4:4, we see the saints and the elders and there are four and twenty elders, which had four and twenty seats, and four and twenty crowns. And these numbers are also found in Revelation 21, where we see the great city, the heavenly Jerusalem descending out of heaven. The apostle Paul called this city the mother of us all. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. (Galatians 4:26)

The gates of this city in Revelation 21:12, has twelve gates, and the twelve gates have twelve angels, and the gates bear the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: (Revelation 21:12)   The walls of the city have twelve foundations, and in these foundations are the names of the twelve apostles. The chief measurement of the city is twelve thousand furlongs, for the length, the breadth, and the height, the wall is measured at a hundred and forty-four cubits. The number twelve to the square, as in Chapter 7, the hundred and forty-four thousand. ♦ End of Side Note: 12 and 24.

The Twelve Wells

Let us now consider the twelve (12) wells or fountains. We turn again to Revelation 7:4. And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. (Revelation 7:4) These are the hundred and forty-four thousand (144,000) who are sealed by God to be a witness for Him during the tribulation period. They are chosen out of the twelve (12) tribes of Israel that are listed in Revelation, Chapter 7, twelve thousand (12,000) out of each tribe. Their lives would be a trial of faith in some of the worst times that man has ever experienced on planet earth. The restraints on evil will be removed, and many of them will be hunted and slaughtered by the hands of ungodly societies of this world. We have already seen the atrocities against the children of Israel during the 2nd World War. The evil heart of man will strike again, and this time (during the great tribulation) will try to annihilate all of Israel. It will only be the divine mercy and grace of Jehovah that will come in His Person as the Lord of lords, and King of kings to deliver them. The Lord Jesus will become to them a well of water of life.

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. (John 4:5)

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. (John 4:6)

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:14)

The connection of the twelve (12) wells or fountains at Elim represent all twelve (12) tribes of Israel. In the Gospel of John, we are introduced to the woman of Sychar, but notice where we are — the location. This well is in a parcel of land that was given to Joseph by Jacob; thus, encompassing the twelve (12) tribes of Israel. The Spirit of God is revealing to us His eternal care and preservation of Israel. The Lord of glory comes to this exact well and notice that He sits upon it as a King over Israel and over the nations. It is from this well of His inner Being that He will supply the world, in grace, and living waters.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. (John 4:10)

The Lord Jesus is the living well of water. It is His grace that quenches the thirst of the spirit. Man must drink of this living water to know the salvation of God. One must come to the well and see His majesty, and His grace, and believe that Christ has died for our sins to quench the burden that we bear from Adam.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (Romans 5:12)

Looking at Israel in this oasis at Elim we see no altar, no worship, no thankfulness, but we see only God’s grace to them. Egypt had such a grip on their hearts that they could not let go of the leeks and garlics, the flesh pots, and the bread of Egypt. Their eyes looked back instead of looking forward in the grace of God. It is so sad that without faith they could not please God because of their unbelief. The cloud now begins to move them into a Wilderness of Sin where there are no wells, and no water. They are leaving the place of grace and good and plenty for a place of barrenness.

Side Note: The Twelves: Revelation Chapter 12, Daniel Chapter 12, Zechariah Chapter 12 and the double of Matthew 24 have a common theme. They all deal with the same time period in the prophetic history of Israel. The same 7 year period, the same 3 ½ time frame, and the same 42 months. ♦ End of Side Note: The Twelve.
